Changing Your Name in Demat Account

Demat or Dematerialised account is mandatory to trade in the Indian stock markets. Used to store securities like equities, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds etc. in electronic form, a Demat account facilitates easy online share trading. Since it stores your financial assets, a Demat account is as important as a bank account and hence investors must be super careful to provide correct information while opening a Demat account. But there can be instances such as name change post marriage, spelling errors etc. which might warrant changing your name in Demat account.

While tedious before, changing your name in Demat account is a simple and hassle-free process. Follow the below steps to change name in your Demat account.

Step 1

 – Visit your broker’s website

Step 2

 – Download the account modification form

Step 3

 – Fill out required details such as old name, new name and submit the attested proof. In case of name change due to spelling error, you will have to mandatorily submit PAN card copy, reflecting the correct name.

Step 4

 – In case you are changing your name post marriage, then you will have to submit a marriage certificate or gazette certificate.

Once successfully verified, your name change/ modification request will be processed within 3-5 working days.

Here is a list of acceptable documents to be submitted for changing your name in Demat account:

Changing name in Demat account due to marriage or divorce:

  • A notary signed copy of the divorce certificate or the marriage certificate.
  • A scanned copy of a passport showing the name of the father or husband.
  • A notary signed copy of the change of name as published in the official gazette.

Changing name in Demat account due to reasons other than marriage or divorce:

  • A notary signed copy of the change of name as published in the official gazette.
